  17.                               METZ FREEMEM
  18.  
  19. METZ FreeMem is a Microsoft Windows utility that monitors and
  20. displays the percentage of free system resources and the amount of
  21. free memory available.  Use METZ FreeMem to track your Windows
  22. memory usage and avoid "Out of memory" messages.
  23.  
  24. WINDOWS MEMORY AND RESOURCES
  25.  
  26. In the Microsoft Windows environment, there is both real and
  27. virtual memory.  Real memory is the base memory of up to 640K
  28. (655,360 bytes).  Virtual memory is a combination of extended memory
  29. and the memory which is swapped to disk by Windows.  You can increase
  30. virtual memory by increasing the amount of extended memory you have
  31. and/or by increasing the size of your Windows swapfile.  (For more
  32. information on using swapfiles, see the Microsoft Windows User's Guide.)

  34. Generally, it is a good idea to install at least 4MB of extended
  35. memory on your system.  If you typically use several large
  36. applications at a time, you may want to add even more memory.
  37.  
  38. Windows applications also use system resources.  The memory available
  39. for system resources consist of two 64K pools, one for the User
  40. Interface and the other for the Graphics Device Interface, for a
  41. total of 128K memory.  Windows has a limitation on the amount of
  42. system resources available.  When several applications are loaded,
  43. you may reach this system resource usage limit.  You may see an "Out
  44. of memory" error message when this occurs.  Because the amount of
  45. memory available for system resources is limited, you will usually run
  46. out of system resources before running out of memory.
  47.  
  48. USING METZ FREEMEM
  49.  
  50. METZ FreeMem displays the amount of free memory on the right side of
  51. the application window and the percentage of free system resources on
  52. the left portion of its window.
  53.  
  54. To test system resource and memory usage for a specific Windows
  55. application:
  56.  
  57.     1.  Set up METZ FreeMem to check memory and to compact memory
  58.         every 1 second.
  59.     2.  Close any applications you are not using.
  60.     3.  Note the percentage of resources and amount of memory free
  61.         displayed by METZ FreeMem.
  62.     4.  Run the application you want to test.
  63.     5.  Note the change in resources and free memory displayed by
  64.         by METZ FreeMem.
  65.     6.  Close the application you are testing.
  66.     7.  Finally, check to see if the resource and free memory
  67.         displayed by METZ FreeMem have returned to the same levels
  68.         they were at before you ran the application.
  69.  
  70. This procedure will reveal the following information about the
  71. application you are testing:
  72.  
  73.     1.  Whether the application is using an extraordinary amount of
  74.         system resources and/or memory.
  75.     2.  Whether it is "cleaning up" used memory efficiently.  The
  76.         levels of available system resources and free memory should
  77.         return to the same level they were at before you ran the
  78.         application.

  81. CONFIGURATION OPTIONS
  82.  
  83. For normal use with Windows, set your METZ FreeMem options
  84. as follows:
  85.  
  86.         1.  Configure METZ FreeMem to check memory every 3 to
  87.             5 seconds.
  88.         2.  Disable the Compact Memory option.
  89.  
  90. Here is a list of available METZ FreeMem Configuration options:
  91.  
  92. Check memory every ## seconds
  93.    METZ FreeMem calculates the amount of memory available every ##
  94.    seconds.
  95.  
  96. Compact memory every ## seconds:
  97.    METZ FreeMem tells Windows to compact memory every ## seconds.
  98.    This is useful when you wish to see how much memory a particular
  99.    application requires.  Check the amount of memory displayed
  100.    before and after an application is run to see how much memory it
  101.    consumes.  When Windows compacts memory, it frees up blocks of
  102.    memory no longer being used by an application.  These blocks are
  103.    kept in memory for performance reasons, so enabling this option
  104.    may impact performance.

  106. Invert Window:
  107.    Choose Invert Window to display white text on a black background.
  108.    You may prefer to use the Invert Window, if you have a black
  109.    desktop or if you are using a Screen Saver.
  110.  
  111. Stay in front:
  112.    Select this option if you want METZ FreeMem to always be visible
  113.    and displayed in front of any other application.
  114.  
  115. USING METZ FREEMEM WITH A MOUSE
  116.  
  117. You can move METZ FreeMem on the screen by pressing down on the left
  118. mouse, button and dragging it to the location you want.  Use the
  119. right mouse button to close METZ FreeMem.  Double-click on the
  120. METZ FreeMem window to display the configuration options.

  122. USING METZ FREEMEM WITHOUT A MOUSE
  123.  
  124. You can use the following keyboard actions with METZ FreeMEM:
  125.  
  126.     F1        Displays the About box which contains the configuration
  127.               options.
  128.     ALT+F4    Closes METZ FreeMem.
  129.  
  130. Tip: Because METZ FreeMem has no caption bar, it is difficult to tell
  131. whether it is the active application window. Press Alt+Tab or Ctrl+Escape
  132. to switch between windows.  See the Microsoft Windows Users Guide for
  133. more information about switching between application windows.

  135. APPLICATION NOTES
  136.  
  137. Use the left mouse button to move METZ FreeMem to whatever location
  138. you want on your screen.  This position will be stored in the current
  139. METZ.INI for subsequent sessions.  The default startup position is
  140. the upper left corner of your screen.  You can add METZ FreeMem to the
  141. LOAD or RUN line in your WIN.INI file so that is run automatically
  142. during every Windows session. METZ FreeMem will stay in front of other
  143. windows so that it is always visible when you uncheck the Stay in Front
  144. option.  This makes it easy to observe memory management problems
  145. with the Windows applications you use.
